More about the music program at Wortham ISD...
Wortham was represented by four performance teams at the Sandylake FunFest Amusement Park Choir Judging in Dallas. The two Recorder Ensembles: Rockin' Recorders Extracurricular Choir and the 4th and 5th Grade Music Classes Recorder Ensemble participated in the instrumental portion in the morning with both groups receiving a Superior Rating and the 4th and 5th Grade Classes winning "Outstanding Performance" for their rendition of the 3-part arrangement for recorders of "Variations on a Theme by Beethoven" and a percussion accompanied 2-part arrangement of "You're a Grand Old Flag". the Rockin' recorders performed "Singin' in the Rain" for Soprano and Alto recorder and "Tarantella", a folk song with piano accompaniment. Wortham, for the 4th year in a row received the "Overall" Outstanding Choir Award for its Show Choir which presented "On the Stage" and "With a LIttle Help From My Friends" by Lennon and McCartney. This year, a new choir group for the school the MS Honor and UIL Choir also received a Superior with its 3-part performance of "River, Sing Your Song" by Eugene Butler. All groups enjoy the professional establishment and the judging group annually with particular comment on the behavior and presentation by all groups as exemplary for the small school.

Congratulations goes to the first UIL Jr. High Choir group for participating in the UIL Region 8 Concert and Sightreading Contest at Midway. The group managed to find 45 minutes a couple days a week working around afterschool activities to create 3 part harmony in both art and show categories.
Wortham All Honors Middle School Choir entered 15 students as a Mixed Ensemble to perform the accapella selection: "Come, Celebrate This Festive Day", the welsh traditional song "All Through the Night", and "River, Sing Your Song". The group was accompanied by Mrs. Wynona Lipsett of Mexia, who gave the students a sight-reading workshop as well as played for the group during performance.
All choirs in UIL, must perform for 3 adjudicators the 3 selections prescribed by the state of Texas and then participate in the academic end of vocal performance in sightreading using solfege, unaccompanied part singing techniques given a time limit. The team is scored on their tone quality, technique, diction, and articulation, and musicianship under direction.
Wortham Jr. High Choirs competed to receive and excellent rating for their part. Wortham has a background of preparation for performance, and the program hopes to find time to allow the students committed to the choirs to be educated in sightreading techniques through regularly sanctioned practice times during the school day.
